Camera Obscura is an optical device which is the ancestor of modern cameras. From the 17th century onwards some artists used it as an aid to plotting compositions. Essentially the camera obscura consisted of a lens attached to an aperture on the side of a darkened tent or box.
To make Camera obscura You will need: -A box -Tracing paper -Scissors -Pen or pencil -Dark coloured tape -Lens -Tape -cardboard toilet roll steps: 1. Cut the flaps of one side of the box off. 2. Tape the other side shut. 3. Cut stamp sized hole on the side taped shut. 4. Trace the side of the box open and cut it out, tape it to the open side. 5. Take lens, put it against hole and measure the distance from the box to see a clear image. 6. Cut the distance of the toilet roll and tape it onto the hole. 7. Tape the lens onto the toilet roll. 8. Using a pen, trace out a image you can see from the camera obscura. |
Hayashi is a Japanesse photography who lives in Tokyo. She is best known for her levitation photographs of herself looking light as air, shot around the city. Levitation photos are supposed to emphasise the natural flow of time.
Hayashi, who naturally shoots with a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second or faster. Furthermore, the pose too is important, with a position that feels right may not mesh well with the environment. Hayashi quoting, "I must be aware of the shapes of my arms and legs and make slight adjustments in every jump". |
What went well was how sharp the images turned out with high shutter speed (1/500th). Furthermore, how the image is portrayed through the poses looking like the person is levitating.
On the other hand, it could of been better if I used a higher shutter speed, maybe 1/1000th, on the shoe image close up. For my second response I will work on portraying an image where it emphasises the 'natural flow of time'. |
This went well as I was able to shoot continuous photos which gave me wide selection of images to choose from rather then shooting multiple until I got a image to my liking.
This could of been better if I used an even higher shutter speed, as in the first photo, the models feet are blurry and with using a higher shutter speed, the photo won't be blurry next time. |

Light painting is the photographic technique of using a moving light source like a flashlight, glow stick, light brush, or even a smartphone to alter an image while taking a long exposure photograph.
The key to successful light painting is use the correct shutter speed but also how you use the model and any props that you want in the shot. Invented by Étienne-Jules Marey and Georges Demeny in 1889. |
Light painting photographer Michael Bosanko has been capturing light since 2004. He discovered light painting on accident, Michael says this of his moment of discovery, “the moon formed part of the scene, but the camera shake caused the moon to make a streak". Ever since that moment Michael has had great success with light painting photography, he has created images for several commercial clients and been published in numerous magazines.

What went well was I was able to make realistically looking GIFs that look like a video. Furthermore, I was able to include the model as part as the GIF and light painting. I could improve my GIFs if I were to crop out the lights from other students GIFs to draw more focus towards the main paint lighting.
